Alex Hitchcock

“leading the charge in terms of new jazz music being created in the UK”

 - BBC Jazz World, UK

Described as a “virtuoso” by The Guardian, saxophonist and Ivor Novello-nominated composer Alex Hitchcock is a leading voice on the international jazz stage. He draws both political and musical inspiration from the radical tradition of Black American music, influenced by artists such as Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, Hazel Scott, Ma Rainey, and Max Roach, and his work reflects the ongoing dialogue—in history and form—central to jazz’s legacy of resistance and reinvention.

Emerging from London’s vibrant jazz scene, Hitchcock has earned a reputation for music that balances urgency with stylistic innovation, shaped by collaborations across Europe, the US and beyond. His performances span major venues and festivals including Ronnie Scott’s, Barbican, Royal Albert Hall, Glastonbury, North Sea Jazz, Jazz à Vienne, Umbria Jazz and Love Supreme.

Following sold-out album launches in New York and London, including a packed show at Ronnie Scott’s, Hitchcock tours a cutting-edge quartet presenting music from his acclaimed new release, Letters From Afar (New Soil, 2025), an album that brings together eight tracks inspired by his transatlantic experience—crafted in New York, rooted in his London heritage. The band’s sound is infused with shimmering bitonal harmonies, layered colour and rhythmic asymmetry, as well as motifs that build and dissolve, all underpinned by Hitchcock’s commitment to free improvisation and deep musical dialogue.

As a bandleader and collaborator, Hitchcock has created inventive projects with Cherise Adams-Burnett, Chris Cheek, Harish Raghavan, Jeff Ballard, Shai Maestro, and Sun-Mi Hong, and contributed arrangements for Jasper Høiby’s We Must Fight (2025). His DREAM BAND series, featuring boundary-pushing combinations of UK and international talent, was Jazzwise Editor’s Album of the Year 2023 and continues to showcase his ability to unite distinctive musical voices.

Critically acclaimed and multi-awarded, Hitchcock’s music invites curious, open-minded listeners into sonic territory that bridges beauty and disruption—a landscape at the frontier of collective exploration and artistic self-renewal.
